Thoughts/musings from the leading edge of media, entertainment & technology
A social network is defined as “an online community of people with a common interest who use a website or other technologies to communicate with each other and share information, resources, etc.” Pinterest is typically considered a social network, but it’s trying to do away with the label. Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann said users pin things because they want them for themselves, not because they want to share them with others later. It’s focused on the individual user, not sharing with the community. Based on how badly things went for Dick Costolo and Twitter after they compared themselves to Facebook at their IPO, it seems smart for Pinterest to create a little distance and define its own category.
