Food waste is a growing problem around the world as $1 trillion worth of food is lost or wasted per year globally (1.3bn tons of food). To address this growing issue, technological advancements are being made to curb food waste such as a modified near-field communication tag that can detect whether a product is safe to eat. Data and technology will most likely play a crucial role in curbing food waste as breakthroughs in technology continue to emerge.
